Amnesty International deeply regrets that Nicholas Ingram was executed in
Georgia, USA, on 7 April 1995.
Ingram, who was originally scheduled to be executed on 6 April, received a
24-hour stay of execution from a federal court just over an hour before his
first execution was due to be carried out. According to press reports, Ingram
was not informed of the stay until thirty-five minutes before the execution,
and although the stay had been granted, prison officials continued preparing
Ingram for his execution by shaving his head and leg. Ingram received a further
72-hour stay of execution from a federal court hours before his second scheduled
execution date, but this was successfully appealed by the state.
Press reports refer to a note written by Ingram describing how he was prepared
for execution before the first stay was granted: "It was devoid of humanity,
a bunch of sick people who apparently volunteered for the job, acting like
I was an animal, a sheep being prepared for slaughter".
Thank you to everyone who sent appeals on Nicholas Ingram's behalf. Letters
expressing regret at his execution may be sent to the following authorities:
