USA: Despite releases, Guantánamo remains an affront to the rule of law

There has been some recent movement by the US administration, perhaps on the defensive in the face of continuing international criticism and as the US Supreme Court prepares to consider whether the federal courts have jurisdiction over the detainees. Amnesty International welcomes releases of detainees from Guantánamo. More than 600 detainees of many nationalities remain held there, however, without charge or trial or access to the courts or to legal counsel. Not least, their psychological health remains a cause for concern, as does the emotional well-being of their families who wait for news at home
