, Index number: AMR 51/031/1992

This report describes cases of concern to AI involving US American Indians. AI has examined most cases of American Indians under sentence of death in the USA and concludes that the death penalty has been applied in an arbitrary and discriminatory manner. Individual cases presented here are those of Anson Avery Maynard, Darias Cravatt and Patrick Croy. Conditions for American Indians on death row are described. Also included are reports of ill-treatment of prisoners, notably in Montana State Penitentiary; conditions in Navajo tribal jails are also described. Another issue in the treatment of American Indian prisoners is the denial of religious rights. Police brutality is reported. Other concerns are the murder of Julian Pierce and the imprisonment of Leonard Peltier
