PERUDolores (Lola) Flores (f), human rights defender
Other members of the Moyobamba Human Rights Committee
The men who shot and wounded her husband Esteban Ríos have been arrested, and
local police have offered Lola Flores any protection she may need to carry
on her human rights work in safety.
Lola Flores works for the Comité de Derechos Humanos de Moyobamba, Moyobamba
Human Rights Committee, a non-governmental human rights organization based
in the town of Moyobamba, San Martín department. In February 1999 a policeman
reportedly threatened to shoot her, boasting that "no pasaría nada", "nothing
would happen", if he did, when she went to a police station to file a complaint
on behalf of a man who had been ill-treated by a drunk policeman.
In March her husband Esteban Ríos was beaten and then shot by two men in
balaclavas who questioned him about his wife’s work with the Moyobamba Human
Rights Committee. According to the police investigation, the men who shot him
are common criminals, and are now in Moyobamba prison awaiting trial before
a military tribunal.
No further action is requested by the Urgent Action network. Many thanks to
all who sent appeals.
