Amnesty International has learned of the release from prison, on 15 June 1993,
of Juan Guerra Cruz a radio-journalist based in the city of Piura, capital
of Piura department.
Juan Guerra Cruz had been detained by members of the police on 2 June 1993.
The information received indicates that the Provincial Attorney in Piura ordered
his release, as she found that the report received from the police contained
no grounds for charging Juan Guerra.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes and airmail
- expressing your satisfaction at the release of Juan Guerra Cruz;
- urging the authorities to conduct a prompt, thorough and independent
investigation into the allegations that Juan Guerra Cruz had been threatened
with death by the police, and to bring to justice those found responsible;
- urging President Alberto Fujimori to issue a directive to the security forces
to the effect that the authorities will not tolerate death threats.
