Peru: Further information on military officers imprisoned as prisoners of conscience

This document updates a paper released in May 1995, which expressed concern that three Peruvian retired military officers could face imprisonment for having publicly criticized Peru’s military operations during the recent armed conflict with Ecuador. Gereral Walter Ledesma Rabaza and navy captain Luis Mellet Castillo were subsequently sentenced to 40 days imprisonment: General Ledesma completed his sentence and Captin Mellet Castillo spent 23 days in detention. AI adopted them as prisoners of conscience. General Carlos Mauricio is serving a sentence of 14 months. AI is calling for his immediate and unconditional release as a prisoner of conscience.
