Brazil: Human rights defenders: Protecting human rights for everyone
Human rights defenders in Brazil, who come from many different walks of life, put themselves at risk of assassination attempts, threats, intimidation and harassment. They challenge the impunity of the security forces, activities of death squads as well as speaking up for those less able to do so for themselves, such as street children, sexual minorities, indigenous peoples and common criminals. They campaign on the issue of land problems, the environment and slavery among others. The document describes cases of abuses against human rights defenders, witnesses, and those who speak out and appeals for adequate protection and for investigation of abuses.
