Brazil: Further information on "disappearance" and new concern: death threats: Marco Antonio Rufino da Cruz; and new names: Bartolomeu Homem D'El-Rei Pinto, Rutonio Jorge de Sant'Anna, Solange (family name unknown)

There is serious concern for the safety of Bartolomeu Homem D'El-Rei Pinto, Rutonio Jorge de Sant'Anna and Solange, who are reported to have been subjected to anonymous death threats. They have been attempting to establish the whereabouts of their colleague, Marco Antonio Rufino da Cruz, who "disappeared" in November 1994. Although an investigation was opened into his "disappearance", no progress has been reported.

There is serious concern for the safety of Bartolomeu Homem D'El-Rei Pinto,
Rutônio Jorge de Sant'Anna and Solange, who are reported to have been subjected
to anonymous death threats after attempting to establish the whereabouts of
their colleague, Marco Antônio Rufino da Cruz, who "disappeared" in November
1994.
Since Marco Antônio Rufino da Cruz "disappeared", the three have made public
denunciations and denunciations to the authorities requesting information on
his whereabouts. Bartolomeu Homem d'el-Rei Pinto and Rutônio Jorge de
Sant'Anna, who are civil servants at the National Library in Rio de Janeiro
and members of the Civil Servants Union (Associação dos Servidores da Fundação
Bilioteca Nacional) and Solange, who works as secretary at the trade union
offices, have allegedly been telephoned at the union offices by unidentified
callers who have threatened them with death. The threats have been denounced
to the federal and state authorities.
Amnesty International is concerned at the reported threats to those who are
seeking to clarify the fate and whereabouts of Marco Antônio Rufino da Cruz,
and at the lack of official information regarding the latter's whereabouts
after his reported arrest by members of the security forces in November 1994.
Although Amnesty International understands that an investigation was opened
into his "disappearance" no progress has been reported and he remains
"disappeared".
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/faxes/airmail letters
- expressing concern at the reported death threats against Bartolomeu Homem
D'El-Rei Pinto, Rutônio Jorge de Sant'Anna and Solange who have been actively
involved in seeking information on their "disappeared" colleague, Marco Antônio
Rufino da Cruz;
- calling for the reported death threats to be investigated and for the three
to be protected in order to guarantee their physical safety;
- expressing concern at the lack of information about Marco Antônio Rufino
da Cruz's whereabouts after his arrest in November 1994 in circumstances
suggesting the involvement of security forces.
