This report is largely based on information gathered or verified during a visit by Amnesty International representatives to the DRC in August 1999. It highlights the serious human rights violations carried out by the authorities against any form of dissent, including the imprisonment of peaceful opponents of the government, gagging journalists and the persecution of human rights defenders.
