More than a dozen members of the Union pour la démocratie et le progrès social
(UDPS) arrested by the security forces on 16 July 1990 in Kinshasa were released
by the end of the month. They had been beaten and two women among them were
said to have been raped.
Ekongo Udimba Paul and at least three other members of the
Mouvement national congolais - Lumumba (MNC-L) who were arrested in July 1990
while demonstrating peacefully in Kinshasa were held incommunicado for several
weeks before being released uncharged.
All appeared to be prisoners of conscience, detained for having exercised
their rights to freedom of association and assembly.
No further action by Urgent Action participants is requested. Thanks
