The people of the Niger Delta are suffering from the harmful impact of decades of oil pollution. There are hundreds of oil spills every year. Shell, the largest oil operator in the region, is responsible, under Nigerian law, for the timely clean-up and remediation of all spills from its pipelines, wells and other infrastructure, whatever the cause. Yet the company is failing to do this. This report examines the adequacy and effectiveness of oil spill clean-up by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria. It is part of ongoing work by Amnesty International and the Centre for the Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) to expose and challenge the human rights impacts of oil pollution in the Niger Delta.
