This report details Amnesty International’s concerns and the government’s response. In the run-up elections in 1997, pro-democracy rallies have been violently disrupted, at least nine people killed and hundreds injured. AI’s areas if cincern abd recommendations for action are set out in the ful report. They include calls for legal and Constitutional reform to conform with internationally agreed human rights standards including women’s rights, an end to arbitrary arrest, incommunicado detention and torture and the abollition of the death penalty.
