CAMEROONIAN WRITER RELEASED
Cameroonian writer Bertrand Zepherin Teyou was released on 29 April. He had been imprisoned
since November 2010 after writing a book about the President's wife.
Bertrand Zepherin Teyou was charged in November 2010 with contempt of a personality (outrage à personnalité)
and unlawful assembly (manifestation illégale). He was sentenced to a fine of 2,030,150 million CFA francs
(approximately 4,425 US dollars) or two years’ imprisonment if he was unable to pay the fine. As he was unable to
pay the fine, he was held in New Bell Prison for over five months.
On 29 April 2011, Bertrand Zepherin Teyou was released because some of his supporters paid the fine on his
behalf. He has rejoined his family and his family has reported that his health has improved.
Many thanks to all who sent appeals. No further action is required by the UA network.
