Cameroon: medical concern: prisoners in need of medical attention

Twenty-eight members of one of Cameroon’s opposition parties, the Union pour la democratie et le progres (UNDP), were arrested in the town of Maroua in July 1994. It is believed that some may be prisoners of conscience. AI is concerned about reports that some of them are in need of medical attention and are without access to treatment. Prison conditions are very poor in Maroua prison, with severe overcrowding. An estimated 200 prisoners are reported to have died there in 1994, due to malnutrition and lack of medical care. Those reported to be in most need of medical care are: Saidou Katchalla, Hamadou Mazoumai, Yougouda Garga, Hamadou Garga and Hamadou Siddi.
