Burundi: Further information on fear of ill-treatment / torture and new medical concern

Commandant Ndabacekure, army officer, Captain Nziyimana, army officer, Isaac Nitereka, member of the executive board of PARENA and PARENA representative for urban Bujumbura, Alexis Simbavimbere, PARENA member, Laurent Bimenyumuremyi, PARENA deputy provincial representative in Gitega, Emmanuel Manzi, a Rwandese national, Paul Mugambage, ex-member of the Rwandese Patriotic Army, Isidore Rufyikiri, senior PARENA official, Army Lt-Col (retd.) Pascal Ntako, senior PARENA official; and new names: Jean Paul Bizimana, Leonidas Ntakaye, member of the executive board of PARENA: The eleven men named above were arrested on 8 and 9 March 1997 in Bujumbura, on suspicion of involvement in a plot to assassinate President Buyoya. There have been reports that they have been tortured and threatened since their arrest, and there is additional concern that Lt-Colonel (retd) Ntako has reportedly been denied the medical care he requires for diabetes. Amnesty International is continuing to investigate reports that the arrests may be politically motivated.
