Bleak outlook for civic space and accountabilty in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Oral statement HRC36

Amnesty International continues to receive reports of violations in the context of the delayed elections. Our organisation has received reports that security forces used tear gas and live bullets against unarmed protestors who were demanding the publication of the electoral calendar on 31 July, resulting in at least 4 injured. Over 100 people were arrested across the country during these protests, including around a dozen journalists who were covering the events unfold. While most of those arrested were released, at least five individuals, considered prisoners of conscience by Amnesty International, remain in detention in Lubumbashi.
