Civil society organizations call on the United Nations Human Rights Council to convene a Special Session to address human rights violations committed in the lead up, during and after the August 2020 Presidential elections in Belarus

In this open letter, Belarusian and international non-governmental organizations call on the UN Human Rights Council to urgently convene a Special Session to address the Belarus government’s crackdown on peaceful demonstrators and other ongoing, widespread violations of human rights, including arbitrary arrests, prosecutions under trumped-up charges, and torture and other ill-treatment, in relation to the 2020 presidential elections. They further call on the Council to adopt a resolution requesting the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to monitor and report on human rights abuses and to establish the facts and circumstances of such abuses, with a view to ensuring full accountability.
