Chad: Protect human rights defenders

Amnesty International welcomes Chad’s acceptance of 13 recommendations to abolish the death penalty, including for crimes linked to terrorism. While preparing to act on these recommendations, the organization calls on the government to immediately establish an official moratorium on executions.

In the 2013 review, Chad rejected all recommendations on the protection of human rights defenders and journalists, including to ensure that they can operate in a safe environment and free from arbitrary arrest. Amnesty International is concerned that since then their situation has deteriorated. The criminal justice system has been used to target and harass defenders and journalists for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.
