Egypt: Human rights in crisis: Systemic violations and impunity: Expanded Amnesty International submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, October-November 2014

Egypt is facing a human rights crisis, with thousands detained as part of a wide-ranging crackdown on dissent. In this document, based on a submission prepared for the United Nations Universal Periodic Review, Amnesty International evaluates the implementation of recommendations made in the previous cycle of the UPR. No checks have been put in place to prevent the use of excessive force and torture by the security forces, restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly continue in law and practice, and the authorities have continued with forced evictions from informal settlements.
