Austria: Torture and ill-treatment (update to report of January 1990)

This report updates “Austria: Torture and ill-treatment” (EUR 13/01/89). Since the publication of that report the Austrian Government has announced a number of measures intended to safeguard police detainees. Amnesty International and the Austrian Government have had extensive correspondence on the subject. In May 1990 the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture visited Austria and submitted a paper to the government confirming Amnesty International’s findings. This report also contains new allegations of ill-treatment and updates of individual cases from the 1990 report, namely: Ernst Dotzler, Walter Jedinger, Miklos Kovacs, Norbert Kritsch, Babur Partener, Ronald Ribitsch and Mario Stangl.
