Bangladesh: Human rights in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, 1989-1990

This paper contains reports of torture and killing of tribal inhabitants of the Chittagong Hill Tracts by security forces during 1989 and 1990 during the government of President Ershad. The violations took place in the context of conflict between the security forces and the Shanti Bahini, an armed tribal group seeking regional autonomy. Amnesty International is disturbed by frequent reports of rape of tribal women and girls by security forces: one recent case is the repeated rape, at gunpoint, of 14 young women in Rangamati district in October 1990. AI is calling on the new Government of Bangladesh to initiate a full, independent, impartial and public investigation into these reports and to bring those responsible to justice.
