Israel and the Occupied Territories: Nayef ‘Ali Nayef Sweitat – prisoner of conscience

Nayef ‘Ali Nayef Sweitat, a 35-year-old journalist from the West Bank, was arrested on 30 April 1992. He was issued with a six-month administrative detention order, on charges of being a senior activist in the al-Fatah faction of the PLO (which he denies). In early 1992 he was appointed as adviser to the Palestinian delegation to the fourth round of the Middle East peace talks but was not allowed to leave the Occupied Territories. Nayef Sweitat has appealed against the detention order; at the time of writing the appeal had not been heard. Nayef Sweitat has been imprisoned on several occasions in the past.
