Iran: Written statement to the 48th session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights

Amnesty International’s concerns in Iran are summarized in this submission. More than 750 people were reportedly executed, mostly, it appears, for criminal offences, especially drug dealing. At least 20 members of a Baluchi tribe in Zahedan are believed to have been executed in October 1991; others executed reportedly included members of the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran. Hundreds of political prisoners, including prisoners of conscience, remained in prison including two elderly men in very poor health. Others were detained without trial or sentenced after unfair trials. AI has received reports of women being arrested for failing to observe dress laws and of people imprisoned for their religious beliefs.
