Russian Federation: Aleksandr Alekseyevich Agafonov

An unofficial source reports that Aleksandr Agafonov, a former police inspector, aged 30, was sentenced to death in 1991 by a court in the Russian Federation. Aleksandr Agafonov was arrested with three others on 14 January 1990, accused of killing a police officer. He denies the charges and alleges that he was beaten in pre-trial detention to make him confess. One of the co-defendants reportedly retracted his testimony incriminating Aleksandr Agafonov and confessed to the crime himself but the court is reported to have refused this evidence. His case has been referred for further investigation after 5 volumes of prosecution evidence due to be heard at appeal were reportedly lost. He is currently on death row in Kresty Prison and is apparently not allowed contact with his family
