Colombia: Human rights lawyer is threatened and attacked

AI is seriously concerned about threats and attacks made against Dr Jorge Gomez Lizarazo and other members of CREDHOS, the small human rights organization of which he is president. On 2 July 1992 Dr Gomez Lizarazo was reportedly warned that intelligence personnel had arrived in Barrancabermeja to kill him; on 10 June he and two other CREDHOS members had survived an armed attack. His personal assistant and CREDHOS secretary, Blanca Valero de Duran, was shot dead by two armed men as she left work on 29 January 1992. Another member, Julio Cesar Berrio Villegas, the organization’s security guard, was killed on 28 June 1992. The police allegedly claimed that he was a guerrilla. AI is disturbed by recent press reports accusing human rights workers of having links with guerrillas.
