People’s Republic of China (Tibet): Further information: Health concern / fear of ill-treatment: Sonam Wangdu and (new name): Lhundrup Gaden

Photographic evidence recently smuggled out of Tibet indicates that 38- year-old Sonam Wangdu, a trader serving a life sentence in Drapchi for the alleged murder of a policeman, has become paralysed from the waist down. The lower part of his body is reported to be senseless and evidence indicates that he is incontinent, confirming earlier reports of serious kidney and bladder injury. He was reportedly beaten and tortured after his arrest and beaten again in December 1990. Lhundrup Gaden, a former monk and prisoner of conscience, is reportedly paralysed from the neck down and is said to be “fighting for his life”. He was allegedly beaten unconscious at the time of his arrest. Both men were in good health at the time of their arrests in 1988.
