Ecuador: fear for safety: Jose Maria Cabascango, indigenous leader

Jose Maria Cabascango, a leader of the National Indigenous Confederation of Ecuador (CONAIE), has reportedly been threatened by an anonymous caller. He arrived back in Ecuador on 22 November 1993, having attended an internation human rights meeting in Canada. During this meeting he gave a radio interview in which he criticized the Ecuadorian government’s treatment of indigenous peoples. This interview was broadcast to the Latin American region.
