Morocco: The pattern of political imprisonment must end

AI welcomes the steps taken in recent years to improve human rights in Morocco but remains concerned about the continued imprisonment of prisoners of conscience. This paper examines laws which lead to the imprisonment of prisoners of conscience. It also describes AI’s concerns about arrests, political imprisonment and prison conditions in Morocco. Eight cases studies are given of prisoners of conscience currently imprisoned (Mohamed Hakiki; Habib Lakdour; Mohcen al Khatib; Mohamed Nacereddine; Mohamed Amin Al-Ghalbouzouri; Abdessalem Yassine; Mohamed Azizi and Ahmed Belaichi). The cases of three people imprisoned after unfair trials are summarized (Azzeddine Fakki; Abdellatif Benazzouz; and Keltoum Lounat Ahmed Labeid).
