Kuwait: Three years of unfair trials

AI is concerned that, three years after the end of the Iraqi occupation, serious human rights violations continue to be committed in Kuwait. This report focuses on allegedly unfair trials in the (now abolished) Martial Law Court and by the State Security Court. Over 120 people suspected of “collaboration” with Iraqi occupation forces, including prisoners of conscience, are believed to be serving prison terms, 19 people are under sentence of death and one person has been executed after grossly unfair trials. Also reported are alleged violations of prisoners’ rights in pre-trial detention, including the use of torture. AI is calling on the Kuwaiti authorities to investigate adequately claims of torture. Some defendants acquitted by the State Security Court in 1992 and 1993 are reportedly still detained in deportation centres.
