Bulgaria: Racial attacks against the Roma in Pleven

AI is concerned about reports of racially motivated attacks on Roma (Gypsies) in Pleven on 26 and 28 March and 1 April 1994. The attacks were made by “skinheads” reportedly armed with knives, sticks and molotov cocktails. AI is particularly concerned by reports that the police failed adequately to protect the victims and, on several occasions, themselves beat members of the Roma community, including women and children, and allegedly racially abused them.
