Concerns in Europe: November 1993 – April 1994

This report contains information about AI’s main concerns in 39 countries in the region from November 1993 to April 1994. (The five Central Asian Republics continue to be included because of their membership of the CIS and the CSCE.) The concerns covered in this report include: imprisonment of prisoners of conscience; human rights in situations of armed conflict; discrimination against ethnic minorities and against homosexuals; ill-treatment and torture in police detention; conscientious objectors to military service; “disappearances”; restrictions on freedom of expression; and the use of the death penalty. A list of international human rights instruments ratified by various European countries is provided.
