Indonesia and East Timor: Power and impunity: Human rights under the New Order

In this report AI shows that human rights violations are widespread not only in East Timor but throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The report describes violations which are of grave concern to AI, including torture, rape, political killings, disappearances, political imprisonment, unfair trials and use of the death penalty. It describes the structure of state and military power in which such violations have become institutionalized. Armed insurgencies and their repression in East Timor, Irian Jaya and Aceh are discussed and human rights abuses by armed opposition groups noted. The report concludes with recommendations to the international community, as well as to the Indonesian Government, which AI believes are essential to human rights protection.
