People’s Republic of China: Update on dissidents detained in Beijing and Shanghai since March 1994

Three more dissidents have reportedly been detained for their pro-democracy and labour-rights activities. They are: Liu Nianchun, Liu Huanwen, and Zhu Fuming. Nothing has been heard of them since their detention. Among those still in detention are Bao Ge, Li Guotao, Dai Xuezhong, Yang Zhou, Wang Fuchen and Yang Qingheng. Lin Muchen was released on 24 June 1994. Wang Zhongqiu and Zhang Lin are believed still to be in prison; Jiang Qisheng was released on 11 July. Xiao Biguang is reported still to be detained for “shelter and investigation”. The only dissidents whose detention has been confirmed by the Chinese authorities are: Yuan Hongbing, Zhou Guoqiang, Wei Jingsheng and Tong Yi.
