Sudan: Outside the war zones: secret detention and torture in northern Sudan

This report describes the continuing repression in the north of Sudan, far from the conflict zones and for reasons largely unconnected with the war. The abuses described include secret detention, torture, release and re-arrest of suspected political opponents in northern Sudan. The information in the report is largely about Khartoum, the capital, but arrests have also taken place in other towns and cities. The violations described here are very probably only a part of the total for the first half of 1994.
