Republic of Korea (South Korea): Concerns relating to freedom of expression and opinion

This report was prepared as a briefing for the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression on the occasion of his visit to South Korea. It summarizes AI’s main concerns about freedom of expression and opinion under the following headings: provisions of the National Security Law which are used to imprison people for the non-violent exercise of their right to freedom of expression; the system of ideological “conversion” in which prison authorities put pressure on political prisoenrs to change their alleged political opinions; and legislation prohibiting third party intervention in labour disputes.
