Indonesia: Women in Indonesia and East Timor: standing against repression

Women in Indonesia and East Timor suffer human rights violations including extrajudicial executions, “disappearances”, torture, arbitrary arrest, unfair trial, imprisonment for peaceful expression of opposition to the government, and the death penalty. Most of these women live in poor, isolated communities and are often employed as labourers. They have limited access to independent lawyers or human rights groups. This report documents political imprisonment in Indonesia and East Timor including women prisoners of conscience, women detained arbitrarily and harrassed on political grounds, human rights violations against women labour activists, torture and ill-treatment of women detainees including those detained as suspected prostitutes and ill-treatment in the context of family planning. The final section examines women at risk of extrajudicial executions, “disappearances” and the death penalty.
