Mexico: fear for safety: Bishop Arturo Lona Reyes, human rights activist

On 29 June 1995, the car in which Bishop Arturo Lona Reyes was travelling was shot at by two masked men. During the past 10 years Arturo Lona Reyes, who is Bishop of Tehuantepec and a well-known human rights activist, has reportedly received death threats on six occasions before this latest attack. All the threats were reportedly as a result of his activities on behalf of the region’s poor and dispossessed, particularly the indigenous.
