Chile: Human rights lawyer charged with sedition: case reopened by the Supreme Court

On 2 December 1994 the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court reopened the case against human rights lawyer Hector Salazar Ardiles, following an appeal by the Military Public Ministry against the closure of the case. The charges against Hector Salazar were originally brought by the Second Military Procurator’s Office, following media interviews in which Hector Salazar had criticized the chief of Carabineros, General Rodolfo Stange, who had been named as one of seven Carabinero officials involved in obstructing investigations into the killings of three members of the Communist Party in 1985. AI is concerned that the reopening of this case shows than restrictions on freedom of expression continue to apply in Chile, especially regarding investigations into gross human rights violations.
