Zaire: Human rights activists under threat

AI is concerned that members of the security forces are carrying out a policy of repression against human rights activists, including arrests, death threats, and other forms of harassment. The victims appear to be targeted because of their public criticism of the governments record of human rights violations and the failure to implement political reforms. Administrative measures were announced in January 1995, apparently intending to make it difficult for human rights groups to operate. AI is concerned that the authorities may try to outlaw human rights groups altogether. This paper describes recent incidents of harassment and repression of members of human rights groups, such as the president of the Fraternite des Prosons au Zaire, Reverend Mukendi Mulaya.
