Somalia: Building human rights in the disintegrated state

The challenge in Somalia is how to achieve protection of basic human rights after years of massive human rights abuses, civil war and famine, intervention by the UN, political conflicts and clan wars. Amnesty International proposes a strategy for building human rights which would include holding Somali political authorities and organizations responsible for protecting human rights and pressing them to stop and prevent abuses, promoting universal human rights standards, mobilizing international concern and action. AI’s part in the human rights program will be to campaign against abuses of human rights with its mandate and to promote these rights in cooperation with other organizations.
