People’s Republic of China: 123 political arrests in Tibet in three months

At lest 123 people, including 50 nuns and 68 monks, were reportedly arrested in Tibet in the first quarter of 1995 in connection with peaceful pro-independence activities. This is more than the number of arrests made during the whole of 1994. This report give brief details of some of those arrested. AI is concerned that most of those arrested may be prisoners of conscience. AI is also concerned about reports that some of the detainees were beaten.
