United States of America: Human rights violations: a summary of Amnesty International’s concerns

This report is about AI’s chief human rights concerns in the United States of America. Issues covered include: the resumption of the death penalty and increased number of executions; police brutality; deaths in custody and unjustified shootings; and torture and ill-treatment in prisons. In all these areas, racial minorities have often been disproportionately the victims of abuses. Also covered in this report are AI’s concerns about the fairness of political trials; laws discriminating against homosexuals; the treatment of Haitian and Cuban asylum seekers; and concerns about conditions in some maximum-security prisons in the USA.
