Brazil: Ill-treatment of landless peasants in the state of Parana

It has been reported that at least 13 people were seriously injured during a violent confrontation between squatter peasants (posseiros) belonging to the Movimento de Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), Movember for Landless Rural Workers, and military police on 8 November in Santa Isabel do Ivai, state of Parana. The peasants suffered from gunshot wounds and abrasions and bruising. There is also concern that several peasants were beaten and shot at after they had been handcuffed. According to a report by the Special Commission of the Legislative Assembly of the state of Parana, “the action taken by the military police was violent, rash and pre-planned”.
