China: Labour activists in China: Trade union action appeal cases

1. Zheng Shaoqiang, Chen Rongyan and Hu Yunquan: taxi drivers sentenced without charge or trial to between one and two years’ detention for “re-education through labour” after holding a half-day protest strike; 2. Li Wenming, Kuang Lezhuang, journalists, and Liao Hetang, a worker, believed to have been detained without charge since May 1994 for attempting to form an independent labour rights group in Shenzhen; 3. Several founding members of the League for the Protection of the Rights of Working People detained without charge or trial, including Zhou Guoqiang, Liu Nianchun, Zhang Lin and Liu Huanwen; 4. Liu Jingsheng, a worker, detained in May 1992 and charged with being a founder member of the Preparatory Committee of the Free Labour Union of China (FLUC), and sentenced after a closed trial in July 1994 to 15 years’ imprisonment.
