Myanmar: Human rights violations against ethnic minorities

Amnesty International is concerned that the Burmese army, known as the tatmadaw, has arbitrarily detained, extrajudicially killed, tortured and ill-treated members of ethnic minorities in the Shan and Mon States and the Tanintharyi (Tenasserim) Division. These violations have taken place in the context of forced portering and mass forcible relocations. This report is based on interviews with dozens of members of the Shan, Akha, Lahu, Karen and Mon ethnic minorities, who are refugees in Thailand. The information contained in the report covers events which took place in 1995, however, recent reports indicate that such human rights violations have continued in 1996.
