Guatemala: Summary of Amnesty International’s concerns: January 1995 – January 1996

Human rights violations continue to be directed against many sectors of society in Guatemala. Of particular concern is the level of threats against human rights defenders. The perpetrators of these violations are mainly the police, militray and army-created civil patrols. Little progress has been made to bring to justice those responsible for past abuses. Exhumations took place in 1995 where large-scale extrajudicial executions had been reported. No investigations have taken place to determine how victims died or who was responsible. Instead family members and others have themselves been harassed.
