1998: A wonderful year for women’s human rights? The United Nations, governments and the human rights of women

During 1998, the UN will mark the 50th Anniversary of the UDHR. Its Commission on the Status of Women will review the sections from the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the final document of the Fourth UN World Conference on Women on human rights, violence against women, women in armed conflict and the girl child. This paper looks at some of the reasons why the human rights of women were neglected in the UN and important developments between 1993 and 1995.
