Republic of Korea (South Korea): Hidden victims: the long-term political prisoners

This report focuses on the cases of long-term political prisoners who were convicted unfairly of national security offences during the 1970s and 1980s. They were arrested illegally, held incommunicado for a long period of time, and claim that they were forced to confess under torture. Amnesty International believes that these prisoners were convicted largely on the basis of these confessions. This report describes the situation of these prisoners and profiles seven individual cases: Yu Chong-sik, Kang Hui-chol, Kim Song-man, Hwang Tae-kwon, Cho Sang-nok, Lee Jang-hyong and Park Dong-oon. A list of 20 prisoners whose cases are known to Amnesty International is appended.
