Mexico: Torture / fear of torture / prisoners of conscience

Laurencio Guarneros Sandoval, aged 40, Julio Bello Palacios, aged 16, Remigio Ayala, aged 18 (community activists), Carlos Ricardo Ruiz Canada, aged 45, restaurant manager: The four people named above were arrested on 11 January 1997 by members of the judicial police in Yautepec, Tepoztlan, Morelos state. Julio Bello Palacios was threatened at gunpoint and Laurencio Guarneros Sandoval was tortured and forced to sign a confession of unknown content. They are currently detained in Cuernavaca, Morelos state. The three community activists are members of the Comite de Unidad Tepozteca (CUT), an indigenous peasant organization, and have been active in protecting and promoting the rights of Tepoztlan people. They are believed to be prisoners of conscience.
