Guatemala: Police convicted of killing street child released: relatives still wait for compensation

Four Guatemalan police officers who kicked 13-year-old street child Nahaman Carmona to death in 1990 were released over a year ago having served six years of a 12-year sentence. In March 1997 Casa Alianza launched a civil action against the police and the Guatemalan government on the family’s behalf for damages. There is concern that the families are still awaiting compensation and that the release of the men could create obstacles in the civil case.
